Finding a focus?

After the Skype on Friday, reading some blogs and chatting to some peers, I feel a little clearer about whats being asked of us for module 2. I have my 1-2-1 with my supervisor Helen tomorrow, so hopefully she will be able to clear up some of my questions…

MIND MAPPING

I always find a good old fashioned mind map gets my thoughts flowing and gets it all down on paper. This is how I started to discover ‘what is my practise’ and my ‘areas of learning’ for module 1. So theres a little bit of advice for anyone in module 1 who’s stuck where to start!

I am hoping that my conversation tomorrow will spark some inspiration and then I can crack on with starting… but for now here are a few topics of interest that I could potentially delve into for my inquiry.

How are you all getting on and does anyone else have any tips on how to come up with your inquiry topics?

  1. Hi Emily! We do love a mind map... and you have some really exciting points on there. I am also finding it so useful at the moment to refer back to my M1 essay and my AOLs in particular! I am picking up on some themes that are making me 'wonder' but am struggling to pin point a specific question. I am glad you're feeling better about M2 now. Good luck for your tutorial tomorrow x

    1. Yes I know the feeling! I think maybe we need to think about your topic as being broad and then we we do our reading and research we will be able to pin point what the 'question' or exact topic that we are looking into! That's what I am hoping happens anyway haha

  2. Mind maps are always a great starting point! Hopefully when you discuss some things with Helen tomorrow you might start to have a better idea of where you want to further explore. Look forward to reading more blogs as you progress into module two. Rhi x

  3. Hi Emily, this is a great post! Mind mapping is brilliant and I always forget to do it, so thank you for this! I hope after your conversation with Helen tomorrow, you might have a clearer idea on what you really want to get your teeth stuck into! All the best, Chloe x

  4. Hi Emily, mind mapping for me is really useful to see things more visually than just a page of text. It's difficult for me to just come up with ideas randomly and what has helped me was just keeping a little journal with me always and writing things as they randomly came to me in the day. Also whenever I would walk I try to listen to different dance podcasts... listening to other people be passionate about what I am passionate about links and ignites things in my own head.... hope that helps xx

  5. The mind maps are back!! I'm definitely planning on doing this to see what little wonders I can come up with. You have some really interesting points on yours that you could explore, I hope you start to find that one is sparking your interest the most or prodding you to look into it. Looking forward to seeing where it takes you! x

Draft deadline approaching

This module have been overwhelming to say the least! I now realise how fortunate I was to start this course in the pandemic and have so much free time to focus on my work. This time round I am abroad in America, working a full time job, I have very limited wifi, I am also Injured and have had so many different distractions! I am proud that I have managed to find the time to do the work, I am just questioning if I've understood the task at hand and if it's to a good standard, but I guess that's what drafts are for! I have found analysing my data very hard! I understand what the data means to me, however getting it down on paper is much harder than I imagined! initially I was scared about interviewing people but that seems to have been the easy part!  I think at the end of the day we all need to remind ourselves that this Inquiry wasn't to solve anything or prove something right or wrong it is to develop our practice and have a greater understanding of our professional fi...

Data Collecting!

I have now conducted all 6 interviews and honestly it has left me with more questions than what I feel like have been answered... I guess it was never the aim to answer our inquiry and our supervisors have always emphasised this, but now I feel like I have so much more that I need to research or it has given me new questions that I could start completely separate research projects about.  I was shocked that everyones answers were so different and so different to my own perspective on ‘ how does social media effect a professional dancers body image’. Potential themes that have reoccured that now I am going to find new literature on are… Pressure    -Pressure with Dance specific body image   -Pressure to promote / market themselves online  The words  FIT a nd  ATHLETIC   came up multiple times Filter     -Filtering what you view online. All my participants said that they really carefully consider what types of accounts that...

Welcome back! Welcome to Module 2!

I am excited to get my head stuck into some books again and continue this journey! A lot has happened in my life recently and I am now living in Brasil until May, so I will be doing this whole module here! I need to be extra organised and get my head around the time zones for all our BAPP skypes. So far from talking to peers on the course and looking over the handbook I feel like I am back at the beginning and it all feels so daunting again! I felt like this at the start of module 1 and we all managed to get through that… so I am sure we will conquer this too! Tonights welcome back Skype I felt was a great way to get my head back into ‘uni-mode’ and it was lovely to see everyone again and of course welcome the module 1s onto the course.  Helen made some great points about just delving into the course and yourself as an artist. She spoke about how some of us may feel distant because of the current pandemic, which is something I really resonate with. It’s coming up to a year since I ...
