Module 1 Focus Skype- 28th September

Module 1 Focus Group, 28th September

Tonight we had a very valuable Skype session where we shared, contributed, developed and debated lots of ideas.

I feel like from all the ideas and information shared tonight, I may have to make a few different blogs to cover all the topics discussed!

We started with the 3 Lenses from our Handbook

1. Communication of ideas (including Web 2.0)

2. Reflection, Ethics and Reflexivity

3. Networks, Community and Connectivisum

I thought I would start by touching on what is web 2.0 ?

After visiting many websites and watching some videos I have summarised that Web 2.0 represents a web where information transfer a two-way street.

The two way communication means that users can communicate with other users on the websites and platforms and share their opinions and information. It bridges the gap between the online users.

‘Web 2.0 marked an era where we weren't just using the internet as a tool anymore—we were becoming a part of it.’

We began to debate about what the pros and cons were to Web 2.0.

The new Netflix program “The Social Dilemma’ came up in discussion. I have actually already written a blog on my opinions on the documentary (feel free to read)

A few comments that stood out to me….

A point raised from a dance teacher in our group was, where are the boundaries with children and the use of social media. Particularly the use of the recent app ‘Tik-Tok’  It was stated that children come into lessons and aren’t engaged in their learning, that they often want to talk and obsess over Tik-tok. There were worries about predators online and how children are becoming more vulnerable to this because of these apps.

It got me thinking that I personally wouldn’t want my children (I don’t have kids yet FYI.) to go onto social media apps, as I do think its dangerous, addictive, bad for their wellbeing and can easily be used incorrectly!

Someone else raised that the suicide numbers have dramatically increased since the world of social media, therefore its obviously causing a negative impact on peoples emotions and has created online bullying!

Another interesting point was how its ironic that social media is called ‘social’ media, as it makes us very unsociable and switched off to our surroundings. The example is that you go into a restaurant and look around and see couples / families on their phones and not engaging with each other!

Some of the positive points raised were that during the pandemic Web 2.0 has been amazing at connecting our industry. I myself have been using instagram live as a way to take classes and to keep practising and training, in fact its even more incredible as you can take classes with teachers world wide that you would otherwise never get the opportunity to!

We spoke about self promotion and how the industry is changing because of sites like twitter and instagram and that even in Westend show programmes people are starting to include their social media handles for people to be able to follow them on their accounts!

...

The conversation then moved onto the Idea of Race. Adesola said that race can be physical, cultural and that history comes into play with peoples identity.

We discussed some peoples personal experiences in our industry and in their everyday lives where they have had racist or unethical experiences.

We spoke about the recent BLM movement and how this has influenced our industry too. One huge thing that I came away with from my peers discussion, was it can be wrong or assuming to ask someone where they are from, instead its better to ask what someones heritage is. These are issues I need to discuss more and admittedly educate myself more on!

I took a lot away from tonights discussion and its got me thinking and asking so many questions!

I can’t wait to read everyone else blogs!

  1. Hey Emily, I really like this post and agree with a lot of what you're saying. It's cool to hear that you used Instagram to take classes and keep creative during the pandemic! That's where I think the internet can be such an amazing tool, finding new inspiration and ideas!

    1. Yes it was more at the sheer panic I wasn't keeping fit and on top of my work. Also I thought I would be returning to my ship quite soon (what a laugh that was) yes I agree using the Internet correctly and in a positive way can be amazing!

  2. Hi Emily, great post. I still haven't watched the social dilemma yet as I started it when my concentration level wasn't ready haha! Its great that you have used this time for your advantage re:live classes as I know it was such a weird situation to be in. Coming back from a contract and literally not knowing what was next...but this too shall pass... Do you feel like instagram has helped you with self promotion in this industry or what are your thoughts on this?

    1. You should hehe or watch sections in small doses!! Yes i think any other break in my career I've been auditioning or taking class physically so this time it was scary to literally have stopped! But I do have the Internet to thank for some sanity and for feeling connected during this time! I think Instagram has connected me with people that I have met whilst working within the industry BUT my account is very personal and I have rarely posted any self promotion on it, its more a family / friends / travel / and a few show snap shots that I have maybe had taken from passengers or other crew! I do not use my Instagram as a business :) and I like to keep it that way!! An American friend I have said she auditioned in LA and they asked when she walked in the door how many followers she has! I think that's mad! Do you use your Instagram to promote yourself?

  3. Thank you so much for your blog! I have really being struggling to understand Web 2.0 and I think its because I have been looking in too much detail but your post has simplified it and cleared the confusion so I really appreciate that. it has also refreshed my thoughts on the call we had which will help when I write my blog tomorrow - I wanted to wait until I had watched Social Dilemma!

    1. Oh I was totally looking for a simple explanation because the topic is so vast! I can't wait to read both your blogs and continue to discuss!

All Module Skype 17th and Module 2 Skype 18th Feb

Wow two skypes in two days! It’s actually been so nice to chat with everyone, firstly in the all module skype last night and again just now with the module 2 skype. It’s lovely to be reminded that we aren’t alone and that theres a lot of support and amasing ideas to be shared… Something I know I personally need to look into more is ethics and from learning about module 2 already it’s unavoidable to not think about them whilst planning our inquiries. A lovely module 3 student broke down ‘Ethical Considerations’ and ‘Ethical Procedures’ to us in such a simple way that I found so helpful. Ethical Considerations - Things that will be affected / consequences of actions Ethical Procedures - Things that are put into place to avoid a negative impact / or harm Helen said to think about the ethics in our inquiry and what procedures we can put into place to avoid any negative impacts. However that be said, she said, we can only plan so much and that we always have to accept an amount of uncert...

Transferable Skills

Transferable skills As I have been delving into the world of ‘what is my practise’ I thought I would dedicate a blog to ‘Transferable skills’…to what I am doing during the year of 2020… the Covid- 19 pandemic… I should have spent this year cruising around the Caribbean, being a beach bum and performing some dreamy shows! However my world came crashing down on March 23rd, when I had to debark the beautiful Freedom of the seas, fly home from Barbados and wave goodbye to my wonderful cast! With no clue that 6 months later I would still be home… After I’d say, about 2 and a half months of grieving, netflix, home workouts and many wine bottles later, I thought it was time that I came back to reality and got a job… a normal job… This has fortunately been the first normal job I’ve had to get in about 5 years and the thought of it filled me with anxiety and dread. Anyway, cut to point, I am now working in a pub / waitressing / bar work / cleaning / making deserts, you name it! But ‘hey ho’ I d...

#LWkeepitreal

My topic of research is focussed on body image and social media. I found this so interesting and wanted to share it on my blog.... Loose Women Body Stories Campaign  I am posting this blog in module 3, however I wrote this during my hotel quarantine after coming home from red list Brasil on the 17th of May 2021. Since choosing my topic of ‘How does social media effect a professional dancers body image”, with such a relevant, poignant subject in the 21st century with the boom and obsession with social media I am regularly seeing articles and information all the time about social media, editing photos and body image. Which is highlighting how big of an issue in the 21st century this is becoming!   The campaign poster shows all the loose women looking happy and confident in their natural bodies in various swimming costumes and bikinis, showing diversity and inclusion. Its what I would describe a ‘real’ looking photo.   Plymouth Live, 2021. Loose Women Body Stories Campaign ....
