Sam lead tonights discussion and explained the three themes above in relation to his professional practice and linked them to working in his band.
I thought about how I use these three themes in my personal professional practice.
Collaboration
“Collaboration is the act of working together, especially on a goal or shared project.
It can also be used to refer to a product of collaboration, as in The new single is a collaboration from the two pop stars.
Collaboration is the noun form of the verb collaborate, meaning to work together.”
As a dancer I may collaborate with someone to create a piece of choreography. This could be with another dancer or I could be creating with a musician or a director. We collaborate ideas and material all the time in the industry when creating shows. Often I am asked to choreograph some free lifts or ‘freestyle’ in sections of shows and I will collaborate with my dance partner to choreograph something appropriate for us to perform. I will collaborate with my students or peers when we create a group performances. Collaborating can be amasing to explore ideas and be inspired, also I believe sharing your strengths and ideas with another person can be where some of the most wonderful things can be created.
Communication and language
“the act or an instance of communicating; the imparting or exchange of information, ideas, or feelings”
I mentioned this in my AOL’s in module 1 and I told this story in the Skype session… I learnt a valuable lesson when I was promoted to dance captain. I often work with multiple nationalities onboard. I had a dancer in my cast who’s first language was Russian. I was giving notes before a show and I wanted to remind the cast to really emphasise the dynamics in a certain dance break. I referred to the choreographer and installers notes and reminded them of their feedback. I used the word ‘Dynamics’ and how we had to show the difference between the hard hitting isolated choreography to the smoothness to show some colour to our dancing. The dancer asked me to explain dynamics which I did verbally giving examples of opposite dynamics , hard soft, fast slow, levels of your body. He was still looking confused and I understood my communication still wasn’t clear enough for him, therefore I had to try and use non verbal communication. So I started to exaggerate by physically showing him the moves. He then understood what I was explaining!
It just goes to show how communication is so important and how as a dance captain I always have multiple ways of explaining things to people. This also applies to teaching as we all have different ways of learning! We need to also be empathetic to each other when something is confusing or there are misunderstandings because of language barriers or just miscommunications.
Risk Taking
“exposure to the chance of injury or loss; a hazard or dangerous chance:
It's not worth the risk.”
In this instance we are talking about if its worth it to take a risk or not. We all know risks can pay off sometimes and other times we learn from our mistakes. I think we need to take risks to grow and expand our practices. They can be scary but most of the time they are valuable learning experiences if they work out or not! We can take risks to see what an audiences reaction is and then by getting feedback and reflecting, we can decide what changes we can make. We also discussed if taking risks enable our own egos.
